A notifiable incident is a biosecurity event that you must report to an inspector by calling 13 25 23 and completing the ‘Advice of Notifiable Incident Form’.
Examples of notifiable incidents may include:
- Unexpected crop failures,
- Unacceptable contaminant levels,
- Blisters on the mouth or feet of stock,
- Abnormally high mortality or morbidity rates in animals or plants,
- A sudden and unexplained fall in production, and
- A contaminant (e.g. heavy metals, asbestos, residual organochlorine pesticides or pathogenic bacteria) above a prescribed threshold.
When should you notify an inspector?
You must advise an inspector of a notifiable incident immediately when you:
- Become aware of the incident,
- Believe that the incident is a notifiable incident or should reasonably believe the incident is a notifiable incident, and
- Have no reason to believe an inspector is already aware of the incident.
What actions should you take?
You should:
- Not take any action likely to increase the risk (e.g. moving or disturbing the animal, plant or thing that is showing signs of the notifiable incident),
- Take all reasonable action to minimise the risk (e.g. contain the animal, plant or thing to prevent spread), and
- Provide any documents or reports about the incident as soon as possible after notifying an inspector.
