MEDIA RELEASE 16 JULY 2025

Winton Shire Council's Strategy for Ageing Well in Winton 2025 – 2028

Winton Shire Council has officially launched its Strategy for Ageing Well in Winton 2025–2028, developed in partnership with leading consultants in wellness and ageing, key stakeholders and community.

To ensure the strategy reflects local needs and aspirations, a comprehensive community and stakeholder engagement process was undertaken. This included meaningful consultation with those who both deliver and rely on aged care and wellbeing services in Winton.

The strategy brings together Council’s current and future programs, services, and activities together with other local and regional services into a unified framework focused on ageing and wellbeing across the region.

“This strategy is about supporting our residents and visitors to live well, age with dignity, and stay active and valued members of our community,” said Mayor Cathy White. “It’s built on local voices, real needs, and the shared goal of creating a strong, connected, and inclusive Winton.”

At the heart of the strategy is a Three-Step Roadmap for Action:

Step 1: Adopt a whole-of-ageing approach – a pivotal mindset that ensures every facet of ageing is addressed comprehensively.
Step 2: Enhance and optimise existing services and programs to meet evolving community needs, while fostering and building on existing social cohesion.
Step 3: Introduce the Winton Wellness Community – a comprehensive initiative that brings together essential services, programs, accommodation, and facilities.

The strategy also reinforces the importance of partnerships with community groups, allied health professionals, the Winton Hospital and Multipurpose Health Service, service organisations, and volunteers. Their ongoing contributions are key to supporting the ageing population across the region.

“We’re not just responding to the needs of today – we’re planning for the future,” Mayor White said. “Whether someone is approaching retirement or simply looking to stay well and engaged, this strategy aims to provide the resources and support to do just that.”

The strategy highlights the vital role of infrastructure such as Jessamine Place Aged Care Facility, while also calling for effective workforce planning, sustainable funding, and long-term investment to ensure the strategy’s success and longevity.

Recognising the unique challenges of ageing in Outback Queensland, the strategy takes a proactive, preventative approach to health and wellbeing that benefits people at every stage of life.
