Mayor’s Welcome
Welcome to the Winton Shire. We are a vibrant community of around 1500 people of which approximately 1000 live in the town of Winton.
We have three small communities in the Shire - Corfield, Middleton and Opalton. The town of Winton has a full range of services, including hospital, chemist, a variety of accommodation options, State and Catholic schools, as well as a full range of shopping opportunities.
Winton has a long association with the song “Waltzing Matilda”, which was penned by prominent Australian writer AB “Banjo” Paterson, in the region, in 1895. The song is celebrated at the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton. Winton also has a proud history with Qantas, as it was here that the airline was born.
Winton is also part of the Australian Dinosaur Trail and hosts both the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum and the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Tracks
Winton has a range of industries located within its boundaries, led by cattle and sheep. Winton is a significant transport hub and has an opal and gypsum mining industry and a developing coal seam gas industry.
With a wide range of sporting organisations to cater for both the older and younger generations, the balance of lifestyle opportunities and economic growth make Winton a great place to do business and live.
